Origins of illusory percepts in digital images

چکیده
Here we show the relation between illusory percepts and statistical regularities across scales and orientations. To this aim, the performance of a computational model for the partitioning of statistical regularities is analyzed on several tasks such as long-range boundary completion, phase-induced contour detection, as well as shape and size illusions. The system for the automatically learned partitioning of statistical regularities in 2D images, is based on a sophisticated, band-pass, "ltering operation, with "xed scale and orientation sensitivity. Experimental results are provided to illustrate this analysis on several examples: (i) Kanizsa-type subjective "gures; (ii) phase-induced subjective contours; (iii) the ZoK llner illusion; and (iv) the MuK ller}Lyer illusion. Oscillatory phase dynamics in neural entrainment underpin illusory percepts of time.
Neural oscillatory dynamics are a candidate mechanism to steer perception of time and temporal rate change. While oscillator models of time perception are strongly supported by behavioral evidence, a direct link to neural oscillations and oscillatory entrainment has not yet been provided. In addition, it has thus far remained unaddressed how context-induced illusory percepts of time are coded f...
متن کاملA theory of illusory lightness and transparency in monocular and binocular images: the role of contour junctions.
A theory of illusory transparency and lightness is described for monocular and binocular images containing X-, T- and I-contour junctions. This theory asserts that the geometric and luminance relationships of contour junctions induce illusory transparency and lightness percepts by causing a phenomenal scission of a homogenous luminance into multiple contributions. Specifically, it is argued tha...
متن کاملIllusory percepts of moving patterns due to discrete temporal sampling.
Continuously, moving objects under continuous illumination can be seen to move in a direction opposite to their actual motion. This illusory reversed motion can be explained as due to discrete temporal sampling of the moving stimulus by the visual system. If temporal sampling lies behind the illusory motion, then the probability of illusory motion should depend on the temporal frequency of the ...
متن کاملA Constraint of Invariance in Integral Features across Frequency Bands Produces Illusory Percepts
Much of object perception requires the visual system to integrate image information for image features that are separated in space or in time. Thus, in a system capable of working with real-world images, there must exist detectors specialized to respond to illusory percepts. However, to discover a scheme that can account for tasks such as long-range gure completion (and thus illusory gures), ph...
متن کاملBrightness perception, illusory contours, and corticogeniculate feedback.
A neural network model is developed to explain how visual thalamocortical interactions give rise to boundary percepts such as illusory contours and surface percepts such as filled-in brightnesses. Top-down feedback interactions are needed in addition to bottom-up feed-forward interactions to simulate these data. One feedback loop is modeled between lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and cortical ...
